Crochet Lego Head :: A Pattern ::

I originally made this Lego head about 18 months ago now, after taking Stacey Trock's fabulous Monster Making class on Craftsy.  I only ever really intended to make one for Milo and leave it at that, but I've had so many requests for the pattern for this I thought I'd write it up for you.

It's really very simple and if you've tried your hand at amigurumi before I'm sure you'll have no problems with this.  If you haven't here a few notes to help you on your way.
  • The whole head is made in one piece, working in continuous rounds of double crochet (UK), meaning you don't join or chain at the beginning of each round, you just carry on in to the next stitch.
  • You start at the bottom and work up to the top, increasing and decreasing at various points to create the shaping.
  • You start your project using the magic loop technique.  This gives you a nice tight first round with hardly any gap in your starting ring, this is especially important for amigurumi as you want your work as tight and as free from holes as possible.  There is a really handy tutorial for magic loop over on craftsy here.
  • You need to use a marker to keep track of the beginning of your round, I find a scrap of yarn much, much easier to use than an actual stitch marker.  I have a tutorial on how to do this here.
  • There is much talk about the right side and the wrong side of your work, I say as for most crafty endeavours, there is no right or wrong, go with what looks/feels best for you.  I know some folks prefer to work through the back loop only of each stitch too. I take the side that faces me as I work to be the right side and work through the whole stitch, but like I said, do whatever works best for you.
  • I recommend you go at least a hook size smaller than your yarn ball suggests, this helps to get a nice tight fabric.
  • You can use whatever kind of yarn weight or content you like for this project, obviously the chunkier the yarn the bigger the head, for my bigger version I used aran weight yarn held double and for the smaller head I used a fingering/4ply weight yarn.  The smaller head measures 5cm tall and 5cm wide.
What you'll need ::
  • Yellow Yarn of your choosing, how much you'll need will depend on the weight of your yarn.  For fingering/4ply, you'll need around 50g/140m.
  • Crochet Hook 1 size smaller than suggested on your yarn ball.  I used a 2mm for my smaller version.
  • Safety Eyes (or black embroidery thread if you'd rather embroider eyes on).
  • Black Embroidery Thread
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Marker (or use yarn scrap-see notes above)
  • Stuffing
Abbreviations ::

dc - double crochet
dc2tog - double crochet two stitches together
rep - repeat
rnd - round
st - stitch
sts - stitches

Pattern ::

Rnd 1: Create a ring using Magic Loop (see notes above), work 6 dc in to loop, place marker to indicate end of rnd. 6 sts
Rnd 2 : 2 dc in each st to end of rnd. 12 sts
Rnd 3: *1 dc, 2 dc in next st, rep from * to end of rnd. 18 sts
Rnd 4: *2 dc, 2 dc in next st, rep from * to end of rnd. 24 sts
Rnd 5: *3 dc, 2 dc in next st, rep from * to end of rnd. 30 sts
Rnd 6: *4 dc, 2 dc in next st, rep from * to end of rnd. 36 sts
Rnd 7: *5 dc, 2 dc in next st, rep from * to end of rnd. 42 sts
Rnd 8: *6 dc, 2 dc in next st, rep from * to end of rnd. 48 sts
Rnd 9: 1 dc in each st to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 9 a further 9 times.
Rnd 19: *6 dc, dc2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. 42 sts
Rnd 20: *5 dc, dc2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. 36 sts
Rnd 21: *4 dc, dc2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. 30 sts
Rnd 22: *3 dc, dc2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. 24 sts
Rnd 23: 1 dc in each st to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 23 a further 2 times.
If you're using safety eyes now is the time to put them in place.
Now is a good point to start stuffing your head.  Add as much stuffing as you can in to the head at this point, but being wary that you still have some crochet to do, so allow just enough space to make it easy for you to carry on.  A good rule of thumb I find when stuffing toys, once you think you've added enough, add more!
Rnd 26: *2 dc, dc2tog rep from * to end of rnd. 18 sts
Rnd 27: *1 dc, dc2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. 12 sts
Finish off your stuffing at this point as the next rnd is the last rnd, make sure your head is nice and plump throughout.
Rnd 28: *dc2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. 6 sts
Fasten off.

Finishing :
  • Thread the fastened off end of your yarn on to your tapestry needle and use this to close up any gap left at the top of you head.
  • Weave in any ends.
  • With the black embroidery thread embroider on the smile for you face and the eyes if not using safety eyes.
  • Admire all your hard work!
